The Sunagakure no Sato desert maze is not a place for an average traveler. The terrain settings are rough, the weather is deadly and the animals are carnivorous. The worst threat of the sands, is the compotition. Caves, dunes, waterless cataracs are only the begining.
The north part of the death maze is a desert made of 100 feet tall sand dunes. Between the dunes are heavy winds and wave like sandstorms. Climbing the dunes is draining; however staying between the hills can cover you in deep sand that traps people in seconds. The center is a two day journey by foot and the the fastest time ever recorded was one day of running constantly.
Scarabs and beetles are the few insects you'll encounter along the way. Swarms of them can poison and kill within minutes of being attacked. Snakes are poisonous, however slow. Carnavoric vultures are pesty when dead animals are spread about. A faint sign of an Oasis is the only direction of the sands. This one day travel to the Oasis leads to a false treasure. The water is poisonous and polluted by bad circulation and dead carcuses. Mirrages are the biggest problem, one might find their true self while traversing the moving mountains.
Sandstorms are common along the way to the center.
To the east are canyons of erroded rock. The ten foot wide gaps and the 100 foot high walls are a nerrow place filled with howling winds. Rock slides are common. The paths between the starting point and the center is a complex maze of twists and turns. Climbing and flying is a pain; the wind causes my accidents and deaths while going through. A one of a kind Bug lives in the mountains. this deadly creature has a rock like back and can hide in the walls of the mountain.
To the south is a large system of caves under a platue of jagged rock and salt cryistals. This desert of sharp pointy rocks are unnavigatable. The caves are dark with no life or animals in them. Using tourches will require 7 hours worth of wood to attempt to go inside. The cave is known to play tricks on the mind with fool's gold and marble deposits.
To the west is a desert full of iron sand and white quick sand. This houses Suna's most haunted ruins. The ruins appear to predate the village by at least 500 years. A curse is said to come to those that trespass this place. "The day passes and th night fades, twilight is the lost way. Travel not, into the dark. Mirrors create shadows and light creates dark."
(mega trap. Like the time when team guy unsealed the tags to release the barrior to save gaara, their clone appeared. Mirrors are posistioned in the ruins, when someone looks at them a clone containing their fighting style and jutsu will come out to play. kkg and bijuu abilities are weak but still used by the clones.)
The center is a dry waterless desert full of dry sand. The miles of dry can only be navigated by the sight of a temple in the distance. Any compasses used with point west instead of north, due to the iron sand in the west. During sandstorms in the west, the magnetic point of a compass takes a unique twist. It points northe for an hour, then west for two hours then east for half an hour. The one hint that genin are given is "North is a lie, west is death, and east is the only way. The chaos of twilight points home at last hour."
